After working on the frontlines of the Somali civil war for 20 years with her two daughters, Dr. Hawa’s courage and ingenuity were finally brought to the attention of the international community when she was recognized as one of Glamour Magazine’s “Women of the Year” in 2010. In February 2011, she delivered a TED talk at the TED Women Conference in Washington, D.C. Her humanitarian work has also been featured on ABC and in the New York Times and, earlier this year,  Dr. Hawa completed a speaking tour across the United States, where she met with Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, United States Ambassador-at-Large for Global Women’s Issues Melanne Verveer, and United States Ambassador to the United Nations Rick Barton.
