Launch of Pro Bono Students Canada of McGill (PBSC McGill)

The event launches PBSC McGill activities, and raises awareness about the role that law students and lawyers can play in improving access to justice in their community. This year, PBSC McGill will also take the opportunity to celebrate the creation of Pro Bono Québec. A reception will follow in the Atrium. RSVP to Émilie Forgues-Bundock.

Speakers

  • Professor Daniel Jutras, Interim Dean of McGill's Faculty of Law, will give an introductry speech;
  • Emma Siemiatycki, BCL/LLB McGill student and PBSC Francophone National Coordinator, will present PBSC’s structure and mandate, and will call attention to the relevance of doing pro bono work while studying law.
  • Me Stephen G. Schenke, Partner at McCarthy Trétrault S.E.N.C.R.L., s.r.l , McGill law graduate, and Bâtonnier of the Bar of Montreal in 2008-2009, will share his view of the lawyer’s role in the community, and will also be representing McCarthy Tétrault, PBSC McGill’s funding partner. His speech will focus on his own pro bono practice, as well as on pro bono culture here in Quebec and in other jurisdictions.
  • Me Michèle Moreau, executive director of Pro Bono Québec, will present Pro Bono Québec, the creation, structure, and mandate of the organization, as well as the role Pro Bono Québec in improving access to justice in our society. Her speech will also focus on the evolution of pro bono culture in Québec in the past few years.
