"A Promise to the Dead: The Exile Journey of Ariel Dorfman" - a documentary film on the writer as refugee

A documentary film about Ariel Dorfman, a Jewish Chilean-American writer and teacher, who worked in cultural affairs in the government of Chile when it was overthrown on Sept. 11, 1973. The film contains interesting documentary footage about Chile before and after the coup and about Dorfman's return visit to Chile many years later. It focuses on the themes of exile and being a refugee, personal and historical memory, democracy and social justice. Ariel Dorfman now teaches in the literature program at Duke University, North Carolina.
