Are you a graduate-level student looking to learn more about sustainable development and the design of cleaner materials and greener products? The Marcel Desautels Institute for Integrated Management (MDIIM), McGill Department of Chemistry, and the Trottier Institute for Sustainability in Engineering and Design (TISED) are collaborating to offer Management, Chemistry, and Engineering graduate students the opportunity to participate in a unique two-day event: "Sustainable Innovation through Green Chemistry Workshop and Case Competition".

This workshop and case competition provides opportunities to build a network of potential collaborators in business, chemistry, and engineering. Public guest lectures will include Dr. Amy Cannon (Executive Director of the Beyond Benign Foundation and recipient of the world’s first Ph.D in Green Chemistry from the University of Massachusetts) and Dr. Heather MacLean (Professor in the Department of Civil Engineering, Joint Appointments in the Department of Chemical Engineering & Applied Chemistry and the School of Public Policy and Governance at the University of Toronto). The lectures will be complemented by interdisciplinary seminars led by experts from McGill University, Queen’s University, and the American Chemical Society’s Green Chemistry Institute.

Students will then apply their learning through a real-time case competition with interdisciplinary teams comprised of graduate students from management, chemistry, and engineering. Participants will gain an understanding of:

  • Business sustainability and innovation, as well as their roles in sustainable development
  • Green chemistry and its role in sustainable development
  • How to assess the marketability of new innovations
  • The challenges of bringing clean technologies to market
  • The challenges of interdisciplinary communications and network-building

A cocktail reception will conclude the first day of presentations. At the end of the second day, a small cash prize will be awarded to the winning case team. Participation in this event is free for management, chemistry, and engineering graduate students, however capacity is limited.
