All Science Challenge 2012!

Published: 25 May 2012

Creativity, teamwork, determination (possibly accompanied by blood, sweat and tears) are some of the skills honed by grade 6 – 8 students participating in the All Science Challenge, a unique, one-day, highly charged competition hosted by Let’s Talk Science on May 25 at The Neuro- the Montreal Neurological Institute and Hospital of McGill University and the McGill University Health Centre.

The All Science Challenge consists of two parts. Round one is a science ‘quiz show’ with 40 challenging questions and 5 bonus rounds that test students’ science knowledge. The second round is a hands-on design challenge in which teams flex their creativity and hone their ability to work together to solve a science problem. This year, 25 teams of 4 students from Montreal area schools are participating. Students prepare for months in advance for the quiz but the design challenge is a surprise. In previous years, challenges included constructing parachutes to drop eggs safely to the ground and a paper bridge sturdy enough to support a bottle filled with water.

Developed and led by Let’s Talk Science Outreach volunteers at post-secondary institutions across Canada, the All Science Challenge appeals to both science enthusiasts and students who may not have previously expressed an interest in science. The All Science Challenge motivates students to learn about science and captures their imagination and passion.  Participating in the Challenge refines essential skills, provides a post-secondary experience, and allows student to meet role models and become inspired by science. It is the energy and passion of these talented bright young students that may help us to find cures for diseases and innovations that will equip us for the challenges of the future.

Over the last five years, the All Science Challenge has grown from one competition to a pan-Canadian series of events. This year 22 competitions are expected to take place across Canada. The All Science Challenge is supported by regional and national sponsors, for more information: http://www.letstalkscience.ca/challenge
