Appointment notice: Chief Information Officer

Published: 15 December 2006

It is with great pleasure that I announce the appointment of Ms. Sylvia Franke as the Chief Information Officer, effective January 15, 2007.

Reporting to the Provost, the CIO will develop and implement information systems and technology (IST) strategies, policies and practices to support the University's academic objectives. The CIO supervises directors in four key areas: Network and Communication Services, Information Systems Resources, IST Customer Support and Instructional Multimedia Services.

Ms. Franke has worked in higher education for over 20 years. She has held the position of Registrar and Executive Director, Admissions, Recruitment and Registrar's Office at McGill, since 2003. Prior to this, she managed two successful systems implementations at McGill: the Student Information System (Minerva) from 2000 to 2002 and the Development and Alumni Relations system (James) from 1996 to 1998. She has previously worked for a software solutions vendor on systems implementation projects at several U.S. universities. Additional experience includes senior positions at the Association of Universities and Colleges of Canada and the Canadian Institute of Planners, and eight years at the University of Toronto in administrative roles. She holds an LLB and a BSc in Computer Science, both from the University of Toronto. Ms. Franke brings a passion for service to students, faculty and staff to her new role as CIO.

Ms. Franke has graciously agreed to continue serving as Executive Director of ARR for an interim period to assist Deputy Provost Morton Mendelson during the transition to new leadership in that area.

Please join me in extending a warm welcome to Ms. Franke in her new position.

Sincerely,

Prof. Anthony C. Masi, Provost
