MONTREAL -- Steven Bielby of Pte. Claire, Que., and Kaiva Mateus of Montreal West, Que., are the McGill University - Ye Olde Orchard athletes of the week, for the period ending Feb. 12, 2012.

Bielby, who measures 5-foot-8 and 155 pounds, won six medals, four of them golden to go along with a pair of silvers as McGill finished second in the men's division of the Quebec university swim championships in Trois-Rivieres, over the weekend. The 22-year-old electrical engineering senior racked up 759 points on the FINA scale. He won the 400-metre freestyle (3:57.51), the 400 individual medley (4:25.85), the 1500 freestyle (15:50.28) and also anchored the winning 4x100 freestyle relay (3:28.94). A product of John Abbott College, he earned all-conference honours and was named swimmer of the year in the five-team Quebec league.

Mateus, a 6-foot-1 all-star middle blocker with the volleyball Martlets, racked up 40 kills, 21 stuff blocks, 14 digs and four aces in 14 sets as McGill upset No.7-ranked Laval, the defending CIS silver-medallists, 2-1 in the Quebec conference best-of-three semifinal series last week. It marked McGill's first-ever playoff series victory over Laval, which will miss the CIS championship for only the second time in 21 years. McGill, on the other hand, has qualified to play at the CIS tourney for only the second time in school history. Mateus, a 22-year-old psychology senior, was also named last week as the RSEQ volleyball nominee for leadership and community service. She is a product of Dawson College.

Both athletes will receive a gift certificate from Ye Olde Orchard Pub.
