BLACKBERRY - CIS TOP 10 TUESDAY (#11): McGill hockey teams, X-country squad remain ranked

Published: 9 November 2010

OTTAWA (CIS) - There are no changes at the top in CIS national rankings this week as all No. 1 teams enjoyed a perfect weekend.

In women's hockey, the McGill Martlets improved to 5-0 in Quebec league play with a 6-1 domination of Carleton.

In men's hockey, the top-ranked Alberta Golden Bears (7-1) enjoyed a break in their Canada West schedule over the past seven days. In another tight media poll, the Bears held on to the top for the fourth straight week despite receiving only four first-place nods, compared to seven apiece for No. 2 McGill (10-0) and No. 3 UNB (7-1).

In cross country, the McGill Martlets head into Saturday's CIS championships in Sherbrooke, Que., ranked No.8. Guelph is the overwhelming favourite in both women's and men's competition. Both the Guelph women and men are multiple defending national champions.

In women's basketball, the Windsor Lancers (2-0), who received the first No. 1 nod in program history a week ago, opened conference play with a pair of dominating road wins, 89-49 over York and 80-43 against Laurentian.

In men's hoops, the Carleton Ravens (2-0), who were ranked first in the initial coaches' poll for the fifth straight year last Tuesday, kicked off their OUA schedule with home wins over Guelph, 90-51, and Brock, 92-70. After receiving 31 of 41 first-place votes a week ago, Carleton was a unanimous choice in the new Top 10.

There is a change at No. 2 this week as StFX (1-0) leapfrogs the UBC Thunderbirds (4-2), who had received the remaining 10 first-place nods in the first poll of the campaign.

Finally, in women's volleyball, the Laval Rouge et Or (6-0) were tested at home by No. 5 Montreal and Sherbrooke but prevailed in four sets over the Carabins and in five over the Vert & Or.

On the men's side, the Alberta Golden Bears (2-0) opened the regular season in Vancouver, where they downed UBC 3-1 and 3-2. The Bears had to overcome a two-set deficit to beat the Thunderbirds on Saturday.
