Carabins win 19th straight, sweep volleyball Martlets

MONTREAL - Fifth-year veteran all-stars Nadine Alphonse and Laetitia Tchoualack scored 14.5 and 13 points, respectively, as the No.2-ranked Montreal Carabins swept No.10-McGill 25-13, 15-23 and 25-14 in women's volleyball at Love Competition Hall, Friday.
It was the third straight loss for the second-place Martlets, who dropped to 13-6 and remain tied with Laval (13-6) in a heated battle for home-court advantage in the playoffs, with one match remaining on the schedule.
The undefeated Carabins (19-0) had a 35-24 edge in kills, a 39-25 advantage in digs and an 8-3 margin in blocked shots.
Olivia Grecu, a six-foot arts freshman from Calgary, led the Martlets with 10.5 points, registering nine kills, one ace, one stuff block and a pair of digs.
Teammate Jen Thomson, playing in her final regular season match ever at McGill, had eight points. The three-time All-Canadian power-hitter from Rosemere, Que., who was shaken up earlier in the week after being knocked down by a car while walking throuh a downtown intersection, posted five kills, two aces, a block and seven digs.
McGill closes out their campaign with a two-hour road trip to last-place Sherbrooke (8-11) on Saturday (6 p.m.). The Martlets swept all three previous meetings by identical 3-0 scores. Laval must travel to Montreal to play the Carabins in a 4 p.m. rendezvous.
Should McGill and Laval end up with the same record, the Martlets would finish higher in the standings as they hold a narrow 8-7 edge in games won between the two teams. Over the season series, the Martlets split their two home matches with Laval by identical 3-0 sweeps. In Quebec City, however, McGill won 3-1 and lost 3-2.
The best-of-three semifinal series is scheduled to be played on Feb. 12, 13 and 14, if necessary.
