CIS Men's Hockey Top 10 (#4): No.2-ranked Redmen inching closer to No.1 spot
OTTAWA (CIS) - The University of Alberta Golden Bears remain at No. 1 for the fourth time in as many CIS men's hockey media polls this season, but the top of rankings is more crowded than ever.
After sharing the 18 available first-place votes evenly with the No. 2 McGill Redmen and No. 3 New Brunswick Varsity Reds in each of the last two polls, Alberta received only four first-place nods this week while McGill and UNB earned seven apiece.
The Bears, however, still managed to hold on to the pole position on total points, amassing 163 compared to 161 for the Redmen and 159 for the V-Reds. Last Tuesday's tally was 165 for Alberta, 161 for McGill and 155 for UNB.
Alberta (7-1) enjoyed a break in its Canada West schedule last week and resumes conference play this weekend with a Friday-Saturday doubleheader at Regina.
McGill crushed Toronto 9-2 and beat Nipissing 5-3 on home ice over the past weekend to improve to 10-0 in OUA play, matching the team's best start ever in regular season action. Back in 1939-40, the Redmen captured the league championship with a 10-0 record.
UNB (7-1) outscored defending University Cup champion Saint Mary's 5-2 and StFX 6-2 in Fredericton to extend its AUS winning streak to seven games since an opening-night loss to UPEI.
Rounding out the fourth media poll of the campaign behind the Big Three are No. 4 Western Ontario (8-0-1), up one spot; No. 5 Manitoba (5-2-1), up three; No. 6 Saint Mary's (3-3), down two positions; No. 7 Saskatchewan (4-4), staying put; No. 8 UPEI (5-3), unranked a week ago; as well as No. 9 Carleton (7-1-2) and No. 10 Calgary (5-4-1), who switch places in the new Top 10.

Top 10 du hockey masculin de SIC (#4) De plus en plus serré au sommet

OTTAWA (SIC) - Les Golden Bears de l'Université de l'Alberta conservent la tête du Top 10 en hockey masculin de SIC pour la quatrième fois en autant de scrutins cette saison, mais le haut du classement canadien est plus serré que jamais.
Après avoir partagé également les 18 votes de première place disponibles avec les Redmen de McGill et les Varsity Reds du Nouveau-Brunswick lors des deux derniers scrutins, l'Alberta n'a mérité que quatre votes pour la première position cette semaine, alors que les Redmen et les V-Reds en amassaient chacun sept.
Toutefois, les Bears ont de nouveau réussi à conserver la pole position au total des points, eux qui en ont récolté 163 contre 161 pour McGill et 159 pour UNB. Le total de mardi dernier était de 165 pour l'Alberta, 161 pour les Redmen et 155 pour les V-Reds.
Les Golden Bears (7-1) profitaient d'une pause au calendrier de Canada-Ouest la semaine dernière et reprendront l'action ce week-end avec un programme double à Regina.
Les Redmen ont écrasé Toronto par 9-2 et ont vaincu Nipissing 5-3 sur leur propre patinoire au cours du dernier week-end pour porter leur fiche de saison régulière à 10-0, ce qui égale le meilleur départ de l'histoire de l'équipe. En 1939-1940, McGill avait remporté le championnat de la ligue grâce à un dossier de 10-0.
UNB (7-1) a disposé des champions en titre de la Coupe Université, les Huskies de Saint Mary's, par 5-2, avant de vaincre StFX par 6-2 pour prolonger à sept sa série de victoires consécutives depuis un revers contre UPEI en ouverture du calendrier.
Derrière le « Big Three », le quatrième Top 10 de la campagne est complété par Western Ontario (No. 4 / 8-0-1), en hausse d'une position; Manitoba (No. 5 / 5-2-1), en hausse de trois; Saint Mary's (No. 6 / 3-3), en baisse de deux; Saskatchewan (No. 7 / 4-4), qui demeure en place; UPEI (No. 8 / 5-3), non classé la semaine dernière; ainsi que Carleton (No. 9 / 7-1-2) et Calgary (No. 10 / 5-4-1), qui s'échangent les neuvième et dixième places cette semaine.
