Excalibur slay Redmen in overtime heartbreaker

PETERBOROUGH, ONT -- Despite rallying for four goals in less than four minutes during the fourth quarter, McGill suffered a heartbreaking 13-10 loss in overtime to Trent University Excalibur in men's lacrosse action at Peterborough, Ont., Saturday.

It marked the third lifetime meeting between the two rivals and Trent has won each game in overtime.

The see-saw battle was tied at 2-2 after the opening quarter but Trent pulled ahead 5-3 by halftime.  The teams exchanged goals in a quiet third quarter to make it 6-4 Trent after three, then McGill rallied with five goals in the final stanza to tie it 9-9.  Will Edwards scored with one second in regulation to force overtime.

In overtime, it was all Excalibur as the home squad dominated ball control and scored four goals in the eight-minute period, while McGill only replied once.

The rivalry continues on October 24 when McGill hosts Trent at Molson Stadium to wrap up the regular season schedule.

Trent improves to 2-0 and sits atop CUFLA East, while McGill dropped to 1-1. The Redmen have little time to rest as they take on the University of Toronto Varsity Blues on Sept. 20 in Toronto.
