The Faculty of Law mourns the loss of Charles Gonthier

It is with great sadness that the Faculty of Law learnt of the passing of the Honourable Charles Doherty Gonthier, BCL'51, LLD'90, on July 17, 2009.

Justice Gonthier was a very close friend of the Faculty throughout his distinguished legal and judicial career.  In recent years, after returning to Montreal following his retirement from the Supreme Court of Canada, he had brought renewed energy to our Faculty as Wainwright Senior Fellow, generously giving his time and offering wise counsel to law students and professors alike.

A year ago, the Faculty honoured his extraordinary commitment to young jurists through the creation of the Charles D. Gonthier Outstanding Young Alumni Award, which recognizes emerging leaders among recent alums of the Faculty.
