FRC - CIS Football Top 10 (#2) Top teams stay put, UBC enters top 10

Published: 6 September 2011

OTTAWA (CIS) - After pulling away from the Concordia Stingers 36-8 in defensive battle, the Laval Rouge et Or lead the second Football Reporters of Canada - CIS national coaches and media football poll.

Spots one through five remained stable with Western, McMaster, Calgary and Saskatchewan all scoring season-opening wins.

The one large shift was felt out west with number six Regina Rams losing to UBC 21-10 at Mosaic Stadium in Regina. The Rams finished atop the annual Canada West Coaches Poll, and are favoured by many to take their first Hardy Cup since 2001.

However, with fifth-year Rams quarterback Marc Mueller injured on the first drive, the Birds took advantage for an opening win on the road and their first spot in the Top 10 since October 16, 2006. UBC quarterback Billy Greene completed 15 of his 25 passes for 262 yards and two touchdowns and also led UBC with 38 rushing yards. As for Mueller, he is out indefinitely with what is being described as a shoulder strain. Regina plummeted out of the Top 10 with the loss.

UBC's move into the Top 10 is timely. The Vanier Cup is the first championship scheduled for the newly renovated BC Place Stadium November 25, raising hopes for a university football revival on the Pacific.

About Football Reporters of Canada - University Division

The Football Reporters of Canada - University Division represents journalists and broadcasters in every region of the country covering CIS Football. Since 1958 the Football Reporters of Canada (FRC) have been an organization of media members who have covered the Canadian Football League, serving to select the league's outstanding players, coach-of-the-year and all-star teams through voting conducted by its members. In 2009, the FRC amalgamated with the University Football Reporters of Canada (UFRC) to give the organization greater scope in its affiliation with amateur and college football.

The FRC also works with the CFL and CIS to establish guidelines and working conditions for the men and women who report on the game. Selected members of the FRC also help to choose builders, players and media members for induction into the Canadian Football Hall of Fame.
