Hamilton pulls heist in Sackville, Mounties fail to get their man

Published: 26 September 2009

SACKVILLE, NB - Running back Andrew Hamilton scored three touchdowns and racked up 349 all-purpose yards as McGill dumped Mount Allison 49-27 in front of 1,523 at MacAulay Field in Sackville, N.B., Saturday.

McGill led the game from start to finish, taking a 13-10 advance after the opening quarter, improving that to 26-13 at the half and 38-27 after 45 minutes. It was the second victory in three weeks for the Redmen, who improved to 2-2 while the winless Mounties dropped to 0-3.

Hamilton, a native of Montreal who was raised in Florida, rushed 28 times for 254 yards and a pair of TDs, one of them a 53-yard romp on McGill's fifth offensive play of the game. He added two receptions for 95 yards, including an 85-yard TD toss from quarterback Jonathan Collin.

"He wasn't bad," dead-panned McGill head coach Sonny Wolfe of his six-foot, 198-pound featured back who was hand-timed at 4.29 seconds in the 40-yard dash during training camp. "He set the tempo right off the bat with that long TD run (before the game was three minutes old).  I've seen a lot of athletes over my many years in coaching but can't remember coaching a running back as gifted as Hamilton."

Hamilton, who was 44 yards shy of the school's single-game rushing record set by David Fleiszer in 1968, gave way to understudy Taylor Kuprowski in the final stanza. The 5-foot-10, 215-pound sophomore from Kanata, Ont., finished the day with 68 yards on 10 carries.

Freshman Lenn Gittens added 25 yards on five carries and added another 73 yards on eight kick returns.

McGill generated a whopping 632 yards of net offence, including 360 on the ground. The Mounties registered 393 yards.

Collin, a freshman from Greenfield Park, Que., also rushed for two majors and threw a pair of TDs, including a four-yard pass to Charles-Antoine Sinotte, who now has four majors in four games. Collin, who leads the Quebec conference with five TDs -- all on the ground -- was good on 16 of 31 pass attempts for 272 yards in his third career start.

Mount Allison all-Canadian Gary Ross returned to his all-star form in a losing cause by picking up 265 all-purpose yards including 106 receiving; 158 in returns and one yard rushing. He also had a pair of TDs on the day, the first coming in the opening quarter on a 90-yard punt return and the second coming at 9:33 of the third quarter on a 35-yard strike from pivot Jake Hotchkiss.

Hotchkiss finished the day 18-of-31 for 258 yards and a pair of TDs, but was picked off five times by a hungry Redmen defence, including two by McGill's Cedric Bishop. The other picks went to Michael Edem, Greg Landry, and newcomer Yves Lauzon, who joined the McGill camp last week. The Redmen forced six Mountie turnovers in all.

Landry, a fifth-year cornerback fromVancouver, B.C., had arguably his best day in a Redmen uniform. He registered seven solo tackles, a pair of assisted tackles and had one knockdown, aside from his pick, which he ran back 30 yards.

Adam Molnar led the Mt. A receiving corps with 10 receptions for 121 yards. RB Matt Pickett led the Mounties on the ground with 11 carries for 65 yards.

The balance of Mount Allison's scoring came on a 25-yard pass to Adam Molnar; and off the boot of kicker Olivier Eddie who kicked two field goals and three converts.

McGill kicker Austin Anderson rounded out the scoring for the Redmen. He was 3-for-3 on field goal attempts from distances of 29, 36 and 24. Anderson, who added a pair of converts, was also the victim of four bad snaps from the second-string snapper who was replacing injured Anthony Lukca, which cost the Redmen six points on three botched conversions and a missed field goal opportunity. On one of the botched attempts, Anderson added a two-point conversion witha passing play to Thomas Fortin.

McGill (2-2) plays at Bishop's next week in a game that will be crucial for either team's playoff aspirations. The Gaiters (1-2) play at Laval (3-0) Sunday.
