It's Miller time as rookie re-writes record book with six goals

MONTREAL -- Newcomer Noah Miller of Burlington, Vt., set a club record with six goals as the McGill men's lacrosse team opened their pre-season with a lopsided 24-3 conquest over Concordia at Westmount Park, Saturday.

The Redmen led 12-1 at halftime and cruised to a convincing win against a brand-new Concordia squad that is hoping to join the Canadian University Field Lacrosse Association next year.

Miller, an NCAA transfer from University of Vermont, beat the previous single game record of five, held by Jimmy Daruwalla, Mike Ting and Brendan Simeson, who still share the school record for a regular season game.

Sophomore marksman Ryan Besse of Aurora, Ont., racked up seven points on three goals and four assists to lead McGill.  Newcomers Ossie Long of Sarnia, Ont., potted four markers and added an assist, while freshman Ross Burst of St. Louis, MO.,  scored once and added three assists.

Sixteen different Redmen players tallied, while McGill's defence anchored by team captain Sepp Stephens of Chapel Hill, N.C., contained the Stingers and senior goalie Guy Fox of Glen Ridge, N.J., was only beaten three times.   McGill benefited from the solid long-stick midfield play of Jon Rathauser of Bell Meade, N.J., and MBA grad student Dave Hogarth of Toronto, who scored a goal in transition.

"While we made mistakes throughout the game, we played 30 players in the contest, which allowed us to evaluate our large pool of 16 newcomers," said Tim Murdoch, head coach of the Redmen."We're delighted Concordia has launched a club lacrosse program as they seek to join the Canadian University Field Lacrosse Association. They have many excellent athletes and given the expansion of lacrosse throughout Quebec, it is just a matter of time before our McGill-Concordia games develop into a cross-town rivalry."

The Redmen have two weeks to prepare for their first regular season game against the Trent Excalibur on Sept. 11 at a neutral site against Bishop's in Lennoxville, Que., before the team's home opener against the Toronto Varsity Blues on Sept. 12  at Forbes Field (2 pm).
