Martlet volleyballers topple No.1-ranked Laval
MONTREAL - Emily Kyte, a sophomore power-hitter from Ottawa, had 15 kills and team captain Kelsey Irwin of Vancouver, B.C., added 13 kills with a pair of stuff blocks and nine digs as the unranked McGill women's volleyball squad rallied for a stunning 3-2 come-from-behind victory over Laval, the top-ranked team in the nation, at Love Competition Hall on Friday.
It marked only the 10th regular-season victory ever against Laval for the Martlets, who have seven of those lifetime wins at home.
McGill won the opening set 25-22 but Laval bounced back to take the next two (25-11 and 25-19), setting the stage for the Martlets thrilling recovery. They roared back to win 25-21 and 15-13. The five-set match took two hours and 16 minutes to play.
"We played very well as a team," said Rachele Beliveau, who has racked up a 430-391-2 record in her 20+ seasons as head coach of the Martlets. It was arguably her biggest regular season victory ever.
"I saw a lot of fight in our game, especially in the fourth set, where Jackie Ng came out with a lot of energy and it rubbed off on the whole team," said Beliveau. "We fought hard for every ball. A win over the No.1-ranked team in the CIS is great for the team's confidence. We really needed a boost like that after all the injuries that we've had to deal with since start the season."
Ng, a third-year power-hitter from Vancouver, was credited with four kills and one ace.
Setter Marcela Mansure, a junior from Lachine, Que., and Sarah Letourneau-Levesque, her Laval counterpart from Pont-Cartier, Que., each registered 38 assists.
Sophomore Daphnee-Maude Andre-Morin of Kitchener, Ont., led the Martlets in digs with 18, while teammate Alexandra Sheppard, a senior from North Vancouver, added nine digs to go along with seven kills.
Junior Kaiva Mateus, a 6-foot- middle-blocker from Montreal, had six kills, one ace and a pair of blocks. Freshman Victoria Pavlovic of Richmond, B.C., and sophomore Victoria Pelletier from Westmount, Que., led the team in passing with ratios of 3.0 and 2.50, respectively.
Laval had a 66-49 edge in kills and a lopsided 21-2 margin in aces
Leading the way for the Rouge et Or was Melanie Savoie of St. Sylvestre, Que., who had an impressive 21 kills, to go along with seven aces and six blocks, all in a losing cause. Savoie was one of four Laval players to reach double figures in kills. Others included Stephanie Alexandre (13), Genevieve Bourque-Tremblay (12) and Donna Ouellet (10).
McGill, which improved to 4-3 in regular-season play, will host Sherbrooke (2-5) on Sunday at 2 p.m., while Laval (6-1) stays in Montreal to take on the No.5-ranked Carabins (6-1) on Sunday at 1 p.m.
