Martlets slay Patriotes, move into first place of indoor league

Published: 12 February 2012

MONTREAL -- The McGill Martlets took sole possession of first place of the RSEQ Indoor soccer league with a convincing 4-1 win over UQTR, Sunday.

"We had a dream start," said head coach Marc Mounicot. "Selena Colarossi scored the first two goals in the first half, the second one of a PK. On the play UQTR received a red card because the defender saved the ball from crossing line with her hand. Playing with a man up was tactically a turn-around but UQTR reduced the score a few minutes later by Annick Maltais and she could have scored the equalizer on a similar break away but our 'keeper Victoria Muccilli made a good save at the end of the first half."

"Rousseau had a strong game in nets for UQTR as we had some good chances. We played well and moved the ball well. Our last two goals were beautiful -- a nice combination play betwen Bourque and Gibson who blasted the ball with a nice left foot shot. Then, a nice chip shot over the goalie form the edge of the box from Cordileone."

"We played smart and with good determination. The entire team should be congratulated with their performance. Rioux and Kirby were solid at the back and Muccilli made good saves at key moments during the game."

"Upfront, Cordileone and Colarossi were able to create numerous chances and they were dangerous throughout the game and were well supported by Bourque."

The Martlets now sit atop the Quebec conference standings, one point ahead of Concordia, with a game in hand. McGill will receive a one-week bye before playing their last regular indoor season game at Laval. A win there will allow the team to clinch first-place. The game is scheduled for 6 pm at the new Telus Soccer Centre at the Laval PEPS on Feb. 24.
