Mateus sparkles like fine wine, produces rosé outcome over Sherbrooke

MONTREAL - Kaiva Mateus of Montreal West, registered nine kills, a pair of aces and four stuffs and two assisted blocks as McGill swept the Sherbrooke Vert & Or 25-18, 25-11 and 25-14 in women's university volleyball at Love Competition Hall, Sunday.
The third-place Martlets improved to 4-7 and moved two points ahead of Sherbrooke (3-8) in the RSEQ standings with four games remaining before playoffs.
"It was a big win and gives us some much-needed momentum," said McGill head coach Rachèle Béliveau. "We served with very good precision today against Sherbrooke, which is known for being a good passing team. Our (game plan) was to hit more from the middle position and that forced them to overload their blockers."
McGill barely had enough time to work up a sweat in a matchup that only took only 72 minutes to complete. They had a 29-23 edge in kills, an 11-1 margin in aces, an 8-1 difference in blocks and a lopsided 45-19 advantage in digs.
It was a good team win with solid contributions from many, including Marie-Christine Lapointe (7 kills, 2 aces, one block) of St. Jean sur Richelieu, Que., Kristina Pavlovic (6-3-1, 10 digs) of Richmond, B.C., and Montreal native Genevieve Plante (5-1-1). Marcela Mansure a third-year setter from Brazil, had 26 assists and four digs, while Daphnée-Maude Andre-Morin of Richmond, B.C., had 12 digs and led the team in assists with 10.
Leading the way for Sherbrooke was Roxanne Hasseni with eight kills and a block.
Next weekend, McGill will host division-leading Montreal (8-3) and second-place Laval (7-4), Jan. 27 and 29, respectively, while Sherbrooke will be on the road against the same two teams.
