First Peoples’ House celebrates aboriginal culture
in song, dance and games
Singing, dancing, drumming and lacrosse will come to McGill
University’s downtown campus Friday as the University and its First
Peoples’ House present the ninth annual pow-wow on Friday, Sept.
24, on the lower field at the downtown campus. And the public is
invited to participate, free of charge.
“The pow-wow is an exciting annual event that celebrates Aboriginal
People with a day-long gathering for students and the entire
community. Diverse events will include traditional dance
demonstrations, drumming, Inuit throat singing and a lacrosse
game,” said Paige Isaac, interim co-ordinator of First Peoples'
House at McGill.
“We are reaching out to Aboriginal high school students from local
and community high schools, and organizing activities specifically
for them, including human bingo, Inuit game demonstrations, a
scavenger hunt and a campus tour, etc.,” Isaac added.
McGill Aboriginal students will provide storytelling for the little
ones from the Rising Sun Childcare Centre, Montreal’s first and
only aboriginal daycare.
Traditional performers will include: The Keepers of the Eastern
Door Dancers, The Deer Family Dancers and The Sampson Family
Dancers, The Redtail Spirit Singers and Tiohtiá:ke
The event will welcome community groups such as the Native
Friendship Centre of Montreal, Quebec Native Women’s Shelter, and
the Montreal Urban Aboriginal Community Strategy Network. High
school students from Kahnawake and Kahnesatake communities will be
on hand to take part in the day.
