Message to McGill Community

Published: 15 December 2011

I have received today Dean Jutras’ Report on the Events of November 10, 2011 – the Report is being released to the McGill community for comment and reaction. The Report can be viewed at www.mcgill.ca/dean-jutras-report.

As I committed at the outset of Dean Jutras’ work, the Report will be considered at the January 18th, 2012, Senate meeting.  The recommendation for a Committee of the Whole discussion on the Report was approved at the December 7th Senate meeting, and that discussion will be live-streamed.  At the Senate meeting, Dean Jutras will speak to the Report and answer questions about it.

As well, the Report will be considered at meetings of the Board of Governors early in the New Year. Dean Jutras will also be available to attend these meetings to speak to the Report.

I expect to provide comments at Senate and at the Board meetings once I have had an opportunity to study the Report and reflect on its recommendations. The Report deserves careful consideration.

In the interim, I warmly welcome comments from members of the McGill community. A confidential email address has been established for these: report.comments [at] mcgill.ca.  To enrich the community discussion of the Report, a website has also been established, on which to post comments.  Before doing so however, confirmation will be sought from each writer that he or she has no objection to publicly posting their views. Any writer’s preference to keep his or her communication private will be respected.   The website at which comments will be posted is www.mcgill.ca/dean-jutras-report.

I thank Dean Jutras for accepting and completing the Report in a timely fashion. I have no doubt that he will have provided an important and valued service to the community in the long-honoured tradition of McGill’s deans of Law.

Sincerely,

Professor Heather Munroe-Blum

Principal and Vice-Chancellor
