Moreau fires five markers as McGill manhandles Queen's

Published: 12 September 2009

KINGSTON, ONT --  Team captain Nick Moreau of Trumbull, Conn., scored five times and freshman Alex Kruse of Oakville, Ont., added a hat-trick and two assists as McGill hammered Queen's 15-5 to open the Canadian University Field Lacrosse Association regular season in Kingston, Ont., Saturday.

Rounding out the scoring for McGill was senior Scott Bailey (2-2-4) of Calgary, rookie Ryan Besse (2) of Aurora, Ont., sophomore Matt Jankowski (1-3-4) of Carmel, N.Y., freshman Jishan Sharples (1-3-4) of Vancouver, B.C., and Greg Henry, a rookie from Halton Hills, Ont.

A stingy McGill defence was anchored by starting goalie Guy Fox of Glen Rock, N.Y., and strongman Jeff O'Neill, a sophomore defender from Toronto.  Fox, a 5-foot-10 senior who was credited with the win, was only beaten three times in 60 minutes before being replaced in thr final quarter by freshman Simon Hudson, a native of Seattle, Wash.

Attackman Nathan Leader paced the Queen's offence with three points, including one goal.

McGill (1-0) now heads to Peterborough, Ont., to face the Trent University Excaliber on Sept. 19. Trent went 10-0 last year to finish first in CUFLA's Eastern Conference ahead of second-place McGill. While the Redmen dropped both of their meetings with Trent, they were one-goal affairs. The Trent-McGill confrontation will be the marquee match-up of the CUFLA's Great Canadian Lacrosse Bash, an event that will also feature a Toronto-Carleton match, as well as a Bishop's-Queen's affair.
