The McGill University Health Centre (MUHC) is proud to announce the opening of the Montreal General Hospital’s new Palliative Care Unit. Designed according to the latest hospital standards, this unit maintains patient dignity thanks to single-bed rooms and provides a comfortable and welcoming environment to families going through this difficult period.

The new unit addresses issues related to privacy, space, usability, and infection control. Its innovative features include a family room, a therapeutic bath area, work spaces for its multidisciplinary team, a conference room, and a medication preparation area. Every aspect of the unit’s design takes into account the very particular needs of these patients, which is reflected in the choice of soothing colours, the use of sound-absorbing materials, and the emphasis of art that produces a relaxing effect.

The unit was dedicated to Dr. Balfour M. Mount as a tribute to his outstanding contribution to the field of palliative care. Known for his comprehensive care approach, Dr. Mount founded the Palliative Care Service at the Royal Victoria Hospital in 1974 and the Division of Palliative Care at McGill University in 1991. An officer of the Order of Canada and of the Ordre national du Québec and a recipient of many other awards of excellence, Dr. Mount enjoys a reputation that is recognized both locally and internationally.

This project was made possible through the generosity of donors to our partner foundations: the McGill University Health Centre Foundation, the Montreal General Hospital Foundation, and the Cedars Cancer Institute.
