Olympian Labonté bars the door on Bisons

Published: 29 December 2010

WINNIPEG - Goaltender Charline Labonté registered a 19-save shutout and picked up an assist as No.1-ranked McGill cruised to an easy 5-0 whitewash over No.4-Manitoba in the opening game of the Bisons Holiday Classic tournament at Max Bell Arena, Wednesday.

The Martlets, who improved to 14-0 against CIS opponents, led 1-0 after the first period and 3-0 after two. McGill had a 30-19 advantage in shots over the Bisons, who lead the Canada West conference with a 9-3-1 record and were considered by many to be the top threat in the nation to challenge McGill for the CIS national championship.

It was the 58th career goose-egg for Labonté, the Olympic gold medallist from Boisbriand, Que., who has blanked opponents in four of her last six outings. The physical education senior improved her lifetime record to 117-9-3 overall in a McGill jersey. She has 11 career assists.

Leslie Oles, a freshman from Beaconsfield, Que., was credited with the game-winner at 12:09 of the first period, connecting on a one-timer from the point. She was one of five marksmen for McGill, who also had goals tallied by seniors Ann-Sophie Bettez of Sept-Iles, Que., Jordanna Peroff of Keswick, Ont., and Alessandra Lind-Kenny of Calgary. Rounding out the rout was forward Carly Hill, a fifth-year veteran from Dorval, Que.

The Bisons will play the Manitoba provincial team on Thursday at 11 a.m. (Eastern). McGill plays unranked Saskatchewan at 2:30 p.m. (Eastern) before taking on the No.5-ranked Alberta Golden Bears on Friday.
