Oops he did it again... Bielby double golden at CIS swim meet

CALGARY - McGill swimmer Steven Bielby of Pointe Claire, Que., earned all-Canadian status and captured gold for the second time in three days as the CIS championships wrapped up in Calgary, Saturday. He won the 200-metre individual medley, establishing Quebec conference and McGill records with a time of two minutes, 0.24 seconds.

Bielby, along with all the other individual gold medalists at the CIS meet, automatically earned an invitation to represent Canada in August at the 2011 FISU Summer Games in Shenzhen, China.

The 21-year-old electrical engineering junior had previously won the 400m IM on the first day of the meet, posting a time of 4:13.50 that counted for 818 points in the Federation International de Natation scoring table, which proved to be the second highest FINA point score over the weekend. Bielby, a 5-foot-8 middle-distance specialist, was beaten only by the 833 FINA points amassed by Ryan Cochrane, the Canadian Olympic bronze medalist with the Victoria Vikes, who won performance-of-the-meet honours for his time in the 1500m freestyle.

In three trips to the CIS championships, Bielby has won a school record six gold medals, to go along with one silver and a pair of bronze medals. The nine podium finishes are one shy of the school record held by Alexandre Pichette (2 golds, 3 silvers, 5 bronzes).

"Steven came to this meet to win the two individual medley events and he did so in convincing fashion," said Peter Carpenter, in his second season as head coach of the McGill swim team.  "While the second day of this meet was a difficult one for our team - not winning a medal - it made today that much sweeter as Bielby demolished the field in his race.  To be able to bounce back under the (high altitude) conditions here at 3,500 feet elevation, took an incredible effort."

The McGill men's team fell just short of their goal of reaching the top 10, finishing 11th of 21 teams.

Among the team's other top performances, rookie Pierre-Alexandre Renaud, an International Development Studies freshman from Laval, Que., qualified for the finals of the 200 butterfly and finished eighth in 2:04.03.

Matthew Khatchadourian, a psychology junior from Beaconsfield, Que., became the third member of the Redmen to reach the finals. He did so in the 50m breaststroke, placing eighth overall in 29.20 seconds. Khatchadourian also swam a personal best in the 100 breast (1:03.62) qualifier and made the consolation final, finishing 14th overall.

Joseph Toops, a science senior from Evanston, Illinois, who was making his first appearance at Nationals, reached the consolation final in the 100 fly and finished 15th overall.

On the women's side, the Martlets placed 14th, with four qualifying for the consolation finals.

Maxime Charron, a physiotherapy senior from St. Lambert, Que., finished 16th in the 100 breast, Sophie Overney-Ragan, a civil engineering freshman from Beaconsfield, Que., was 13th in the 50 fly, Leanne Roach, a science junior from Riverview, N.B., was 16th in the 200 breast and Myriam Donato, an anatomical science sophomore from Pte. Claire, Que., was 12th in the 200 fly.

For the second straight year, the University of Calgary Dinos were CIS champions in both men's and women's swimming - this time in their own pool.

While Calgary's women led wire-to-wire to win their third straight national title by 130 points, the Dinos men went back and forth with their old rivals, the UBC Thunderbirds. After punctuating their win with a victory in the 4x100 medley relay, the day's final event, the Dinos had a 50.5-point edge atop the leader board.

Cochrane and Calgary's Erica Morningstar were named the CIS Swimmers of the Year. Cochrane, a 2008 Beijing Olympic medalist, also took home rookie-of-the-year honours for his outstanding performance at the event, while UBC's Savannah King was named CIS female rookie of the year.

Cochrane set the standard on the night with his marquee event, the 1500 freestyle, finishing in 15:03.27, more than 27 seconds ahead of second-place David Dimitrov of Calgary. Combined with his victory in the 400 free Friday night, Cochrane finished with an aggregate FINA score of 1644.

Morningstar posted a FINA score of 886 in her 200 IM Saturday, stopping the clock in 2:09.70. Combined with her 100 breaststroke victory Thursday, her combined FINA score was a whopping 1743. Morningstar did taste defeat for the first time in her CIS championship career, however, settling for silver in the 50 breaststroke behind teammate Allison Long. Between individual and relay events, Morningstar has 20 gold medals in 21 career races at the CIS meet.

King scored double gold in the distance freestyle events to take the CIS top rookie honours with a combined score of 1643.

Dominique Massey-Martel of the Laval Rouge et Or captured the Sprinter's Cup Saturday night thanks to his gold medal performance of 48.91 in the 100 free to follow up a 50 free title from Friday night.
