Prof. Robert Leckey publishes report: "Families in the Eyes of the Law"

Published: 14 July 2009

In a new study titled “Families in the Eyes of the Law: Contemporary Challenges and the Grip of the Past,” published by the Institute for Research on Public Policy (IRPP), McGill Law Professor Robert Leckey analyzes contemporary family law in Canada, specifically questions of custody, marriage and divorce, parentage and the legal recognition of unmarried couples.

“Issues like polygamy, how many parents a child can have, and what unmarried partners owe one another have repeatedly made headlines over the past decade; these stories suggest that contemporary family life and family law are often on a collision course,” says Leckey. “Canadian family law has evolved considerably over the past few decades, but social practices have changed even more dramatically.”
