MONTREAL - Sophomore Myriam Donato, a butterfly and individual medley specialist from Pointe Claire, Que., led all McGill swimmers with three podium finishes, including a silver and two bronze medals at the fourth Quebec Cup university meet of the season, held at McGill's Memorial pool, Saturday.

She captured silver and bronze medals in relay events and finished third in the 400 IM. Donato was one of only three McGill swimmers to come away with an individual medal performance. She joined Steven Bielby (silver, 400 IM) and Laura Mendonca (silver, 50 breast) on the podium. McGill also won a pair of relay silvers and two relay bronzes.

"All things considered, the meet was just OK for us, unfortunately," said Peter Carpenter, head coach at McGill. "We did score 30 more points than last year at this meet, but it wasn't nearly what I had hoped for."

No new McGill swimmers met the rigid qualification standards to compete at the CIS Nationals, so that number remains at 21 qualifiers heading into the Quebec conference championship meet at Montreal's CEPSUM pool, Feb. 12.

The Montreal Carabins took the women's team competition with 144 total points, winning six of 10 races in the one-day meet. They were followed in the standings by Laval (81 pts; 3 golds), McGill (72 pts; 0 golds), UQTR (33 pts; one gold), Sherbrooke (0), UQAC (0) and UQAO (0).

On the men's side, Laval finished ahead of the pack with 159 points and six gold medals. The Carabins were second with 119.5 (three gold), followed by McGill (42), Sherbrooke (22), UQAC (10.5; one gold), UQTR (0) and UQAO (0).
