Research Administration Roles and Responsibilities

Published: 10 December 2012

Below is a joint announcement from the Office of Sponsored Research and Research Financial Management Services:

Further to the memo of November 6, 2012 on Research Administration and Accountability, please find attached the Research Administration Roles and Responsibilities of McGill employees and units. This document was developed by an internal working group, the Tri-Agency Response Implementation Group (TRIG), in response to the first recommendation of the Final Report of the Tri-Agency Financial Monitoring Review, that the roles and responsibilities of everyone involved in the management of research grant funds must be well-defined and understood. This document will be the cornerstone of a comprehensive training program that is being developed by the Office of Sponsored Research (OSR) and Research Financial Management Services (RFMS) that will address the entire lifecycle of a sponsored research project. The roles and responsibilities focus on the administration of research funding from the pre-award phase to project close-out.

This document has been approved by the TRIG Executive Steering Committee led by the Vice Principal, Research and International Relations and the Vice-Principal, Administration and Finance, following extensive consultation with several groups and committees within McGill.

The Research Administration Roles and Responsibilities will serve as a reference for all existing and new staff for the purpose of research management and training. The pdf document is posted on the OSR website and the RFMS website.

We look forward to collaborating with you as we advance our efforts towards effective research administration.

Mary-Margaret Klempa, Senior Director, Office of Sponsored Research
& Cristiane Tinmouth, Controller, Financial Services
