Security announcement

Published: 3 November 2009

Late yesterday afternoon, McGill Security Services and Montreal police were called to the basement of Burnside Hall to investigate reports of a robbery in progress by two masked individuals. As a precautionary measure, Security evacuated the building. The individuals fled the scene with some property, including personal laptop computers. An investigation is underway by Montreal police in cooperation with McGill Security Services.

Yesterday, when security personnel asked people to evacuate the building, some people were hesitant to do so. For your own personal safety, it is extremely important to co-operate with emergency and security personnel in these situations and follow their instructions.

Our custom is to bring to the attention of the community any serious security incidents. We ask that you remain aware of your surroundings, and do not leave any property unattended. Please relinquish items if confronted and always make safety your priority.

Any member of the McGill community who sees any suspicious activity or a crime in progress is asked to report it to McGill Security at 514-398-3000 (downtown campus) or 514-398-7777 (Macdonald campus). In an emergency, people should first call 911, and then report to McGill Security Services.

People who own laptops are invited to register with McGill Security Services’ STOP program. For tips on personal safety, please visit the Security website
