Simmons plays hero as Stingers get goosed

Published: 23 October 2009

MONTREAL -- Hannah Simmons, a junior midfielder from West Vancouver, B.C., converted a pass from Claire Hooper in the final minute of the opening half as McGill settled for a 1-0 win over Concordia in women's soccer at Molson Stadium, Friday.

Sophomore 'keeper Shimone Slomowitz, also from West Vancouver, registered two saves to earn the shutout in cold, wet playing conditions.

McGill had a 13-2 edge in shots, a 10-2 margin in corners, and a 15-6 difference in crosses.

"Despite a total domination especially in the first 45 minutes, we had problems clicking on our scoring opportunities," said McGill head coach Marc Mounicot.  "We missed chance after chance, especially from the 18-yard box. Although the (weather) conditions were difficult for 90 minutes, we lacked aggressivness when taking the decisive shot in front on the net. We will try to improve that aspect for our next game."

The victory clinched a playoff berth for McGill, which improved to 7-3-1 with three games left in the regular season. The Martlets remain fourth in the eight-team Quebec league, one point behind Sherbrooke (7-2-2) and two back of second-place Laval (8-3-0). The top four teams qualify for post-season play. Eliminated from a playoff berth is fifth-place UQTR (3-6-2), Bishop's (1-7-3), Concordia (2-9-0) and UQAM (1-8-2).

McGill will host UQAM on Sunday in a 5 p.m. start in their last scheduled home game at Molson Stadium, before closing out the QUSL campaign  with road contests at Bishop's (Oct. 30) and UQTR (Nov. 1).
