Swimmers Bielby, Roach golden at Quebec Cup 1 meet

SHERBROOKE -- McGill freshmen Steven Bielby of Pointe Claire, Que., won two events and Leanne Roach of Riverview, N.B., captured one as McGill finished second at the season-opening Quebec Cup university swim meet, a two-day event held in Sherbrooke over the weekend.

Bielby qualified forthe CIS national championships with gold medals in both the 200 butterly (2:07.20) and the 400 freestyle (4:00.74).

Roach posted a personal best time to win the 200-metre breaststroke in two minutes, 39.47 seconds to qualify for Nationals.

She also won silver in the 4x200 freestyle relay as the Martlets finished second of six teams.

Laval swept both the men's and women's competition.
