The Birth and Evolution of Expressionism course is a collaboration between McGill University and the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts and is articulated around the exhibition From Van Gogh to Kandinsky: Expressionism in Germany and France, 1900-1914 (on view at MMFA from October 6, 2014 to January 25, 2015).

This course will focus on the birth and evolution of Expressionism; it will examine how this international movement saw artists in Germany and France alike responding with various aesthetic approaches to modern masters such as Vincent van Gogh, Paul Cézanne, and Paul Gauguin, among others. Throughout the different sections of the course, insight will be gained into the culturally rich cosmopolitan milieu from which Expressionism came.

The course will include – besides a general introduction, supported by visual material – visits to the exhibition, discussions with staff (curators, conservators and museum educators) at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts. This course will also offer a behind-the-scene view of how such a major exhibition is conceived and organized. The course will make the link with the permanent collection of the MMFA and highlight some of the works in the galleries.
