KPE's Shannon Herrick named as finalist for 2018 SSHRC Storytellers contest

Published: 1 May 2018

The Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC) has announced that Shannon Herrick, master's student with the Department of Kinesiology and Physical Education, has been named as a finalist for the 2018 SSHRC Storytellers contest.

The annual Storytellers contest challenges post-secondary students from across Canada to demonstrate—in three minutes or 300 words—how social sciences and humanities research is affecting our lives, our world and our future for the better. Earlier this week the council named 25 finalists. Each finalist receives a cash prize of $3,000 and the opportunity to compete in the Storytellers Showcase. This year’s Showcase will be held at the 2018 Congress of the Humanities and Social Sciences, taking place May 26 to June 1 at the University of Regina.

Shannon’s submission (video) can be viewed on youtube. The story is titled "LGBTQ+ and Physical Activity" and it deals with issues surrounding LGBTQ+ adults who engage in athletics and physical activity, including transphobia, homophobia, gender identity, and exclusion.

"In communicating their research stories, our talented finalists have masterfully informed us about key issues that impact our society. In doing so, they have effectively demonstrated the value of social sciences and humanities research, offering critical insights into modern social, cultural, economic and wellness issues that Canadians value,” said SSHRC President Ted Hewitt. “Congratulations to SSHRC’s 25 Finalists!”

On Thursdays starting April 19, SSHRC features finalists from among the Top 25 on its website and on social media. SSHRC will also post a list of honourable mentions on its YouTube channel. Follow SSHRC’s Twitter feed and #SSHRCStorytellers to find out more about the winners and the campaign in the lead-up to the Storytellers Showcase.

Shannon Herrick is a second-year MA student in the Department of Kinesiology and Physical Education, and will be starting her PhD with KPE in September, 2018. Shannon's thesis explores the experience of LGBTQ+ adults in physical activity. Shannon's supervisor is Professor Lindsay Duncan.
