Homecoming - Classes Without Quizzes 1D "Use it or Lose it"
"Use It or Lose It: A Guide to Brain Maintenance"
Loss of memory is one of the greatest challenges to aging
individuals. We should maintain a routine of physical activity,
social interaction and intellectual exercise in order to lessen the
“symptoms” of getting older. In this session, Dr. Clare McFarlane
will discuss some of the scientific research that supports
strategies to help slow memory loss, such as:
- Playing games that encourage strategy and problem solving, like
bridge, crossword puzzles or Sudoku.
- Joining educational programs for older adults as a means to
continue engaging in social, physical and intellectual activities
after retirement.
Clare McFarlane, born and educated in the UK, came to Canada 50
years ago for a one-year research fellowship at McGill’s Institute
of Parasitology. After meeting and marrying an entomologist from
Saskatchewan, she remained in Canada, becoming a biology teacher in
the CEGEP system and later a lecturer on genetic engineering in
McGill’s Department of Animal Science. Following her retirement
five years ago, Dr. McFarlane joined a McGill Institute for
Learning in Retirement creative writing group and has since
moderated study groups on topics such as “Darwin and Intelligent
Design,” “The Genetics of Human Behaviour,” “Genetic Engineering,”
and “The History of Landscape Gardening.”
