Congratulations to Dr. Myriam Srour, Assistant Professor in the Department of Pediatrics, Division of Pediatric Neurology, and Dr. Robert Koenekoop from the Department of Pediatric Surgery for their success as co-PIs on a grant entitled Neurodevelopmental basis of nervous system disorders (NeuroBasis) awarded by the Canadian Foundation for Innovation. The aim of their work will be to discover new mutations and new genes that cause neural and retinal degenerations in children suffering from inherited retinal dystrophies, pediatric seizures, autism and other disorders.

Dr. Ronald Gottesman, Wendy McDonald Chair in Pediatric Medical Education and Professor in the Department of Pediatrics (Division of Critical Care Medicine) is the recipient of 2020 Mentor of the Year award for Region 4. The award recognizes Fellows of the Royal College who have had a significant impact on the career development of students, residents or Fellows.

Congratulations to Dr. Franco Carnevale, Associate Member of the Department of Pediatrics (Division of Pediatric Critical Care Medicine), who was awarded the Ordre des infirmières et infirmiers du Québec (OIIQ) 2020 Badge of merit. The Badge of Merit is awarded annually by the OIIQ to one of its members whose actions have contributed to the advancement of nursing care. It is the highest distinction awarded by the Order.
Dr. Olivia Tse, Assistant Professor in the Division of General Pediatrics, Department of Pediatrics, was recently appointed as Assistant Dean, Resident Affairs, Postgraduate Medical Education, in the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences.
Dr. Reza Alizadehfar, Associate Professor in the Division of Allergy, Immunology and Dermatology in the Department of Pediatrics, on receiving the national prestigious John Toogood Teaching Award from the Canadian Society of Allergy and Clinical Immunology (CSACI).
The John Toogood Teaching Award is presented to a CSACI member in recognition of his or her exemplary teaching in the field of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology. To be considered for this award, the candidate should be actively involved in teaching trainees and demonstrate excellence in teaching and mentoring.

The Department of Pediatrics is pleased to announce that Dr. Terry Sigman’s mandate as Division Director of Pediatric Gastroenterology and Nutrition has been renewed for a 5-year term commencing January 1, 2021.
The Telemachus Scholars Program (within the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences), which began in 2018, is an innovative small group mentorship program bringing together faculty members with similar academic roles, but at different career stages and in different departments, to learn from each other, and help each other meet career and personal goals. This program runs for 18 months and consists of five workshops and four small group meetings.
This year, the Pediatric Chairs of Canada (PCC) provided a unique opportunity to honor those who have responded in a heroic way to the COVID-19 pandemic, including individuals and teams that are part of the healthcare workforce. As part of its 2020 Annual Awards Celebration, to be held virtually, PCC will be honoring these leaders from across the country.
