There’s already plenty to celebrate during Montreal’s 375th anniversary year, and now there’s yet another reason: Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) has named Montreal the world’s number-one student city. The global higher education analyst released its fifth annual QS Best Student Cities ranking on February 14, 2017.
Montreal jumped from last year’s seventh place to overtake reigning champ Paris, now the world’s second-place student city after four years in the top spot.
Professor Edward Klorman has received the 2017 PROSE Award in the category of Music and the Performing Arts for his book Mozart’s Music of Friends: Social Interplay in the Chamber Works, published by Cambridge University Press. The annual PROSE Awards recognize the very best in professional and scholarly publishing by bringing attention to distinguished books, journals, and electronic content in 53 categories.

The McGill Baroque Orchestra will feature guest conductor Barthold Kuijken in concert this Friday, February 10, 2017 at 7:30 p.m. in Redpath Hall.
The Canadian Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences (CARAS) has announced the nominees for the 46th Annual JUNO Awards and this year Schulich faculty, alumni and former faculty are well-represented in the lists of finalists. Here below is a comprehensive list of those nominees with ties to the school. JUNO Week 2017 will be hosted in Ottawa from March 27 through April 2, 2017, and a live broadcast of The 2017 JUNO Awards will air on CTV and CTV GO on Sunday, April 2 from the Canadian Tire Centre in Ottawa. Congratulations to all nominees.
The 20th annual Conseil Québecois de la musique Gala was held on Sunday, February 5th, at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts. Under the artistic direction of Alain Gauthier, Québec's musical community gathered to celebrate the artists, performers, musical ensembles, cultural organizations, composers and musicologists who have shone across the province and beyond over the past year. Once again, there were many awards distributed to members of the Schulich community. Here below is a comprehensive list of winners with connections to the school, be they graduates or professors.

On Wednesday, February 8, 2017, saxophonist Sam Newsome will be performing with pianist Jean-Michel Pilc, McGill Jazz Orchestra I and other guests at 7:30 p.m. in Pollack Hall. In anticipation of this concert, Schulich graduate student Chris Maskell spoke to Newsome to learn more about his life and music.
Aujourd’hui, les paradigmes ont changé. On ne va plus à Opera McGill pour dénicher des talents d’ici, dont les meilleurs iront ensuite à l’Atelier d’opéra avant de se faire entendre à l’international. On y entend une panoplie de gens venus de partout pour étudier à Montréal. Ils donnent un spectacle de niveau souvent quasiment professionnel.
The McGill Trumpet Ensemble, let by Professor Richard Stoelzel, has advanced to the semi finals of the National Trumpet Competition to be held in March 2017 in Denver,Colorado. In addition, Francis LaPorte and Brent Proseus have advanced to the semi finals of the National Trumpet Competition College Solo Division.
Rashaan Allwood, a student of Professor Hans-Ola Ericsson, was awarded second prize at the Wadden International Organ Competition in Denmark this past weekend. HIs award of 75.000 Danish Krona is approximately $14,000 Canadian. “I am indeed very proud of Rashaan whose shows exceptional hard work,talent, and determination," said Prof. Ericsson. "The organ program at Schulich provides talented organists and church musicians with an opportunity to hone their artistry and skills."

As Opera McGill’s landmark 60th season continues into the New Year, the momentum of its programming isn’t letting up. With major events on the horizon such as next weekend’s production of Die Fledermaus at the Monument-National and the subsequent Opera B!nge festival, both Schulich students and faculty alike have busy schedules.
In this piece, George Ensescu festival organizer Ilya Poletaev discusses his passion for the music of the composer and his motivations for organizing this first festival dedicated to his music with Schulich graduate student Chris Maskell.
In the world of music, it’s an unfortunate reality that brilliant artists can go overlooked. Luckily, these same musicians are often championed by those who love their work, and in the case of the late Romanian composer George Enescu, his voice in Montreal is Schulich piano professor Ilya Poletaev.
Jazz musicians paid tribute to Martin Luther King Jr. with a concert based on his speeches and words. The concert at McGill University used speeches by the civil rights leader as an auditory backdrop to the instrumental pieces.

The Schulich School of Music at McGill University is now one of the Canadian Opera Company Orchestra Academy’s collaborating organizations, joining founding participants The Glenn Gould School at the Royal Conservatory of Music and the University of Toronto’s Faculty of Music. This unique program returns for its fourth year of three-week intensive training beginning on January 8, 2017.
