Since she became part of the faculty of the Schulich School of Music in 1992, ten of Professor Marina Mdivani’s students have won the McGill Concerto Competition. The most recent of these, Anna Peletsis, shares an interesting parallel with Mdivani’s past – both attended the Moscow Tchaikovsky Conservatory and eventually relocated to Canada.
Schulich School of Music Doctoral piano student Zhenni Li has won Second Prize in the 15th Annual International Edvard Grieg Competition which was held September 2-10 in Bergen, Norway. In addition to the 20,000 euro second prize, Ms. Li was also awarded the 1000 euro Orchestra Prize. Ms. Li is a student of Prof. Stéphane Lemelin.
Jeremy Cox has been named 2016-2017 Schulich Distinguished Visiting Chair in Music. He brings to the school an expertise that spans performance, scholarship, teaching, academic leadership, and curriculum design. Prof. Cox will be involved in many aspects of school life this year, including teaching, conference organization, academic review, and writing.
We wish to congratulate this year’s winners of the 2016 edition of the Banff International String Quartet Competition, the Rolston String Quartet. Formed in 2013 by Luri Lee and Jeffrey Dyrda (BMus 2009) on violin, Hezekiah Leung on viola and Jonathan Lo on cello, this Canadian string quartet is currently the graduate Quartet-in-Residence at Rice University’s Shepard School of Music. Other achievements for the Quartet include first place at the 2016 Chamber Music Yellow Springs Competition, and prizes at the M-Prize and Bordeaux International String Quartet Competitions.

I've always come to music as a violinist -- a one-line player in an orchestra or ensemble. Reading was just a means of getting the music into my head and into my fingers, and though I felt like I had a deep understanding of harmony, it was completely instinctual and experiential.

One of the finest operatic singers of his generation, tenor John Mac Master began his storied showbiz career in Montreal and the West Island singing in 1970s rock ‘n’ roll bar bands.
“My longest-lasting band was called Jade, and we played Top 40 hits like Taking Care of Business and December, 1963 (Oh, What a Night),” says Mac Master, who was the band’s charismatic, long-haired lead singer. “We played bars like the John Bull Pub downtown and roadhouses on the lakeshore.”
Brent Proseus, a second year trumpet Performance Major in the class of Richard Stoelzel has been chosen one of six students to compete this week in the prestigious Ellsworth Smith Solo competition. The competition will be live streamed . Brent Proseus is also a 2016 International Solo Competition winner and a winner of the McGill Concerto Competition,

MISQA (McGill International String Quartet Academy) was founded in 2010 by Mrs. Constance Pathy. Since its inception, Prof. André J. Roy has assumed its leadership as per his position of general & artistic director. Each year, the academy invites the most significant practitioners of the genre to share their experience with and to educate some of the worlds most promising young quartets; four senior quartets and four junior quartets are selected every year. Private lessons, master classes and concerts are all part of the academy during two weeks.
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Sandy Pearlman (August 8, 1943 – July 26, 2016). Producer, Lyricist, Manager, and in his words, a Relentless brainstormer of the ever-tightening embrace of Music by Technology and Technology by Music.
Schulich School of Music Alumna Alexa Raine-Wright brings home the $10,000 Devonna & Amos Gerber Grand Prize and Indianapolis Baroque Orchestra Prize at the 2016 Indianapolis International Baroque Competition. Vincent Lauzer, Schulich Alumnus also won the Dee Garrett Laureate and Stanley Ritchie Audience Prizes.
The student musicians in the McGill Symphony Orchestra have easy access to mentors who regularly perform for a world-renowned orchestra. Almost two dozen members of the Orchestre symphonique de Montréal teach at McGill’s Schulich School of Music and roughly one-third of the OSM’s musicians are McGill graduates. It's been a great month for clarinettist David Dias Da Silva (ArtDip'16). Not only did he win the 2016 Prix d'Europe, but he has also just been awarded first place in the Canadian Music Competition's (CMC) Stepping Stone Competition. In addition to a $10 000 prize, he will also perform at the 2016 CMC’s Gala Concert with the Orchestre symphonique de Drummondville, on July 5, 2016, at Maison des arts Desjardins.
Clarinettist David Dias da Silva (ArtDip'16) has won the 2016 Prix d'Europe. Third prize, the Le Prix Québecor and the Prix Guy Soucie were awarded to violinist and DMus candidate Elizabeth Skinner (MMus'15). Soprano Erin Berger (BMus'11, MMus'13) received the Prix du Lied et de la mélodie, and flutist Lara Deutsch (BMus'12, MMus'14) was awarded the Prix du Centre de musique canadienne au Québec.
