Professor Marcelo M. Wanderley has been awarded an Inria International Chair for 2016-2020. Prof. Wanderley is the first McGill researcher to be awarded this chair and is among the four awardees this year. Inria is the French National Institute for Computer Science and Applied Mathematics. This is the first time a Professor of Music is awarded this chair, attesting to the wide variety of research directions and the impact of the work developed at the Schulich School of Music at McGill University.

Anna Peletsis, a doctoral piano student of Professor Marina Mdivani, has won the McGill Concerto Competition and will perform next season with the McGIll Symphony Orchestra. A graduate of the Tchaikovsky Moscow Conservatoire where she with professors Sergey Dorensky, Pavel Nersessian and Nikolai Luganski, she also won the 1st prize of the International Piano Competition "Nikolai Rubinstein" in Paris in 2004. She has participated in the “Jose Iturbi” masterclasses in Valencia, Spain and in a  master class of French Music in Paris, France.

Brent Proseus, a student of Professor Richard Stoelzel, Brass Area Chair, has been named winner of the 2016 Schulich School of Music Woodwinds, Brass, and Percussion competition.  Brent’s first trumpet teacher was his father, Eric and he  continued his studies with Gregg Good. Brent was principal trumpet in the Michigan Junior High All-State Band and he was principal trumpet in the Michigan All-state Orchestra as well as the lead trumpet in the Michigan All-State Jazz Band.

On Feb. 7, Chelsea Rus was named the winner of the inaugural Wirth Vocal Prize. According to the Schulich School of Music’s website, the $25,000 prize is given to “an exceptional voice student… in recognition of outstanding accomplishment as a singer and significant promise for an international career.” Pretty heady stuff for any young singer – but especially so for Rus, who had never even heard an opera until her first year of college in 2009 back home in Abbotsford, B.C.

Cellist Elinor Frey, an alumni of the Schulich School of Music, has won the early-music recording of the year award for her disc Berlin Sonatas on the Passacaille label.   Fascinated with the cello’s origins and the creative process of new music, Elinor Frey plays both period and modern instruments.

Professor Emeritus John Grew, former Dean of Music, will be invested into the Order of Canada on Friday, February 12th 2016 in a ceremony at Rideau Hall. The ceremony, which begins at 10:30am EST, will be webcast live from the Governor General of Canada's website. A webcast link will be available on their homepage before 10:30am on Friday.

Rémi Bolduc, Chair of the Jazz Department at the Schulich School of Music, was awarded an Opus Prize in a ceremony held Sunday, February 7 at the Salle Bourgie.  His concert performance of  "L'Hommage à Dave Brubeck" featured performances by Schulich School of Music jazz students Andrew Boudreau, Mathieu McConnell-Enright and Louis-Vincent Hamel.  Bolduc says  "Having this opportunity to give a concert with some of my students from the Schulich School of Music is an inspiration for me and also for them.

British Columbian soprano Chelsea Rus was named the winner of the 2016 Wirth Vocal Prize in the inaugural edition of the competition held Sunday, February 7 in Tanna Schulich Hall.  Ms. Rus performed a program that included works by Puccini, Massenet, and Strauss.  She is a master's student in the studio  of Joanne Kolomyjec.

Finalists for the Conseil Québécois de la musique's Prix Opus were announced last week, and there are many nominated who are  Schulich alumni and/or faculty.   The Prix Opus were established in 1996 to highlight the excellence and diversity of Québec's musical offering, and are awarded in many different categories.  The winners will be announced in a Gala event to be held on February 7, 2016.   Artists with a Schulich connection are highlighted in bold.

William Caplin and Philippe Leroux were inducted as fellows of the Royal Society of Canada on November 26th, 2015.  The Royal Society of Canada (RSC): The Academies of Arts, Humanities and Sciences of Canada was established under an Act of Parliament in 1883 as Canada’s National Academy, the senior collegium of distinguished scholars, artists and scientists in the country. The primary objective of the Society is to promote learning and research in the arts, the humanities and the natural and social sciences.
