On June 14, the Government of Canada announced $693.8 million in funding for discovery and applied research, including $94.5 million for the Canada Research Chairs (CRC) Program to support 121 new and renewed chair holders at 39 postsecondary institutions across the country.

Plastics, textiles, and electronics have revolutionized our modern world, but their massive production has led to the accumulation of non-biodegradable and toxic wastes. This is a problem McGill researcher Noémie-Manuelle Dorval Courchesne hopes to have a hand in solving. Today she was named a Tier 2 Canada Research Chair in Biologically-Derived Materials, in recognition of the importance of her research for Canada’s future.

In its twentieth year, the Canada Research Chairs Program (CRCP) is awarding 25 McGill researchers with eleven new and fourteen renewed chairs. The projects supported by this round of CRC funding tackle a variety of topics, including, racial inequality in democratic societies, arctic ecology and data mining for cybersecurity.

New chair holder Sarah Harrison, who holds joint appointments in the Departments of Mathematics and Statistics, and Physics, will continue her investigations in string theory, a theoretical framework that proposes a unified description of all particles and forces in nature, including gravity. Among the questions Professor Harrison explores, the mysterious relationship in mathematics between finite groups and modular forms (ominously named “monstrous moonshine”), which appears to have deep connections to physics and string theory.

Some drug regimens, such as those designed to eliminate tumors, are notorious for nasty side effects. Unwanted symptoms are often the result of medicine going where it’s not needed and harming healthy cells. To minimize this risk, researchers in Quebec have developed nanoparticles that only release a drug when exposed to near-infrared light, which doctors could beam onto a specific site. Their report appears in the Journal of the American Chemical Society.
