With the federal government under pressure to freeze its planned increase to the carbon tax, policy experts are calling for a clear-eyed debate over the legislation and its role in the country's climate goals. Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre, along with seven premiers, have called for the scheduled April 1 hike to be scrapped, saying it will only make inflation worse. (CBC News)

November 9, 2023 | The federal government has announced carbon-tax exemptions for household heating and Chris Ragan joined Power & Politics to talk about these exemptions. Chris Ragan has stated that carbon-tax exemptions might not be the way to energy affordability, usually because exemptions are often extended and there is no end to these exemptions due to political pressures.

In a 6-3 decision, the Supreme Court of Canada has ruled the federal Liberal government's carbon pricing regime is constitutional — a major decision that allows Ottawa to push ahead with its ambitious plan to ensure every province and territory has a price on carbon to curb greenhouse gas emissions. Some provinces — notably Alberta, Ontario and Saskatchewan — have forcefully opposed the carbon tax, arguing natural resources are in the provinces' jurisdiction under the Constitution.
