Academic Standing for Certificate Programs

You must obtain a minimum grade of “C” in all courses, with the exception of CMSC 000 for which a minimum grade of "B-" is required; change in requirement as of Winter 2017. 

The only other exception is that a grade of "D" is allowed in one elective course if it is not a prerequisite to other courses to be taken in the program.


You are permitted a maximum of three (3) unsatisfactory grades on your record, excluding supplemental exams. If you have more than three (3), you will be asked to withdraw from your program.
An unsatisfactory grade is an “F,” “J,” or “D” in required courses, and an “F” or “J” (or more than one “D”) in elective courses.


To graduate, you must complete all program requirements with a Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of at least 2.0, otherwise, you may be asked to withdraw. See Grades and GPA.

Academic Standing for Independent (Special) Students (Undergraduate Programs)

If you are an Independent (special) student, you are still expected to be committed to your courses, even though you are not formally admitted in a program.


You must complete all courses with a minimum grade of “C,” including co-requisite and prerequisite courses. A maximum of three (3) grades below this in any course offered through the Department are permitted on your record. If you accumulate more than three grades below C and your CGPA falls below 2.0 you will not be permitted to register in other courses offered by the department.


You will only be permitted to repeat a given course once.

Academic Standing for Diploma Programs

You must complete all courses with a minimum grade of “B-.” This includes all:

 

  • Required courses
  • Elective courses
  • Co-requisite courses
  • Prerequisite courses
  • Courses outside your program of study.

 

You will only be permitted to fail two (2) courses. On the third failure, you will be asked to withdraw from the program.


You have a maximum of four (4) years to complete a Diploma Program.

Academic Standing for Graduate Certificates

You must complete all courses with a minimum grade of “B-.”

You are permitted a maximum of one (1) failure. On the second failure, you will be asked to withdraw from the program.

You have a maximum of two (2) years to complete a Graduate Certificate in Management.

Academic Standing for Independent (Special) Students (Graduate Programs)

You must obtain a minimum of “B-” in all courses, including co-requisite and prerequisite courses.

You are permitted a maximum of two unsatisfactory grades, after which, you will be asked to withdraw from the Department.

Other Academic Standing information applicable to all CPD Undergraduate and Graduate Programs
  • In all cases, even if you improve your grade by repeating a course or taking a supplemental exam, the original grade will remain on your record and count towards the total number of unsatisfactory grades.
  • If you fail to comply with the minimum standards set out by the CPD, you will not be permitted to continue in your program and your registration will be cancelled.
  • Once you are asked to withdraw due to unsatisfactory grades, you will not be permitted to register in other courses or programs in that Department, or exercise deferral privileges.

 

The School of Continuing Studies affirms the right of students to dispute substantive or procedural academic matters, including decisions about the student’s continuation in a program; or concerning any
other decision with respect to the application of academic regulations and requirements to a student. A formal academic appeal must be made in writing directly to the Career and Professional Development
Appeal Committee. This request must be accompanied by supporting documents which substantiate reinstatement.
