What do COVID-19, self-driving transport, smart cities, cloud gaming, the Canadian arrest of Huawei CFO Meng Wanzhou in 2018, President Trump signing the “Secure and Trusted Communications Networks Act” in March 2020, various American and British celebrities and recent arson attacks on mobile cell towers across North America and Europe have in common? The simple answer lies in two characters, as in 5G, which have generated a rather unique and intriguing confluence of amazement, anger, excitement, panic, hope, ignorance, and massive global and geopolitical tension escalation. The last time that I can recall that any technology related tag or acronym had a somewhat similar level of such dramatic impact was 20 or so years ago involving the infamous Y2K debacle! So, what is fundamentally at stake when it comes to 5G? How can we sort through what is a rather complex topic to determine what is hype, what is fake and what is real? To this end, I have captured my perspective on demystifying this boldly transformative world of 5G in a series of blogs as follows:
Part 1: Mobile History, Standards, and the Dramatic Launch of 5G
Part 2: 5G Unleashing Massive Market Opportunity and Innovation
Part 3: “Inconvenient” Elephants in the Room – 5G Potential Impacts on Health and Environment
Part 4: Preparing for the 5G “Brave New World”
Ok then, let us take the “red pill” and dig deeper! On to Part 1: Mobile History, Standards, and the Dramatic Launch of 5G.
