Automatic updates for the win!

Your system can keep you secure.

Do you ever receive those annoying pop-ups on your computer telling you to update your operating system? Most of the time, we click on "Not now." We've all done it! More often than not, they are security updates that will help protect your device from possible threats and, at the same time, improve the reliability of your computer and software.

Week 4 of Cybersecurity Awareness month focuses on not only staying in cyber shape, but this week, we highlight some ways you can stay on top of some healthy security habits and maintain those cybersecurity muscles!

Software updates are not just about adding new features or improving performance; they also contain essential security patches. Cybercriminals are constantly on the prowl for vulnerabilities in outdated software, and when they find one, they can wreak havoc. A good practice is to enable automatic updates; set it and forget it. Let your device do all the heavy lifting, constantly checking for the latest updates.

For more information about enabling automatic updates, we encourage you to read the McGill knowledge base article about staying safe online.

Additionally, we recommend reading this very informative article from Canada's Get Cyber Safe website regarding system updates.
