Op-Ed: How COVID-19 is Affecting Vulnerable Students

Published: 29 April 2020

Carolyn Peris is a research assistant on IMPACTS, a special needs teacher in Montreal, and a big sister to a brother with Down Syndrome. In her op-ed, Carolyn talks about how students with (dis)abilities have been impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. "Being suddenly forced out of their predictable and comfortable routine can be stressful and anxiety-inducing for them," she explains. "School is where they socialize, learn, play and interact with students of similar abilities, and they benefit from diverse kinds of therapies. This is where a good school makes a lifetime of difference for a child with special needs."

Carolyn offers an important, valuable, and heartfelt perspective as a teacher and sibling to someone with a (dis)ability. Read more in her op-ed here.
