Resident Dr. Shawna Rieux wins research prize at JDIQ

Montreal Children’s Hospital General Practice Resident Dr. Shawna Rieux won 2nd place for the Prix Denis Robert

Montreal Children’s Hospital General Practice Resident Dr. Shawna Rieux studies what happens when one of your teeth gets knocked out, and best practices when dentists put your tooth back in. Dentists call this process dental avulsion and reimplantation. Avulsions are one of the most severe types of dental trauma and occur most often among 6 to 15 year-old males.

Dr. Rieux was selected to represent the McGill University Faculty of Dental Medicine and Oral Health Sciences to compete for the Prix Denis Robert. She presented her study and findings at the Espace Résidents during the 2022 edition of the Journées Dentaires Internationales du Québec (JDIQ). A jury representing Québec’s three faculties of dental medicine (Université Laval, Université de Montréal, and McGill University) awarded Dr. Rieux second prize in the competition for her research, titled “Survival of reimplanted permanent teeth following traumatic avulsion” (supervisors Dr. Ferraz dos Santos and Dr. Chan).

Dr. Rieux completed a DDS at the University of Toronto before starting the General Practice Residency program at McGill. She will complete the program this month.

Three other residents from the Monteral Children’s Hopital , Drs. Gabrielle Gaudreau, Reem Mahko, and Jiayi Li, were also selected to represent McGill at the JDIQ.

The projects the 4 residents presented were:
