Match Process

Matching program for Residency positions

The Match Process normally takes place in November of the year prior to program start date in July. The Match process is executed and governed by the National Matching Services Inc. (a third party).  All information regarding this process is clearly outlined on the NMS Dental Matching page.

All McGill GPR program sites will participate in the National Canadian GPR match. Please refer to the National Matching Service webpage for exact deadlines.

  • All candidates will apply to the McGill GPR program sites through the online application system. Applicants will be asked to select which McGill residency program site they would like their application sent to. Information regarding the application process can be found on the GPR program page.

  • It is MANDATORY that all applicants register to participate in the National Canadian GPR Match by October 1. Information and registration information is available on the NMS Dental Matching page.

  • Each qualifying candidate’s application will be sent directly to the GPR site they have applied for. Site Directors will review the applications and select the candidates they would like to interview. Candidates may be invited to interview at more than one site.

  • Candidate interviews for all three McGill GPR sites are held the first weekend of November so as to facilitate travel arrangements for out-of-town applicants. Local applicants may be interviewed at different dates. Interviews are held at the relevant sites.

  • The Dean’s Office sends a letter to candidates who have been selected for an interview informing them of the time(s), date(s) and location(s) of their interview(s).

The National Matching Services (NMS) Phase I match for GPR Canadian residencies ranking list opens in October. All applicants will be required to have submitted their preferred ranking of programs through the NMS website after their interviews.

  • Candidates’ ranking of their preferred sites must be submitted through the NMS website in November. At the same time candidates submit their preferred ranking of sites, sites submit their preferred ranking of candidates. This is a double-blind process.

  • NMS will release the results of the “Match” to applicants and the sites in November. All open (unmatched) positions will be released shortly afterwards and unmatched applicants can directly contact those programs with open positions.

  • Candidates have approximately 7 days to accept or decline a position offered to them.

  • A candidate who accepts a residency position is required to make a deposit in the amount of $2,000 to hold the position. This fee will be credited towards the candidate’s University fees. It will not be refunded if they fail to register for a position they have accepted.
