McGill Desautels Accounting Ethics Case Competition

The Laidley Centre for Business Ethics is pleased to announce the inaugural McGill Desautels Accounting Ethics Case Competition, which will be held on Friday, March 31, 2023. The theme of the inaugural competition is “Artificial Intelligence: New Ethical Challenges for Business Professionals.” No knowledge of artificial intelligence is required to participate. A reception will be held in the evening on Thursday, March 30, to welcome participants and kick-start the event. The deadline to apply is Friday, January 27, 2023.

The main objectives of the competition are to:

  • increase students’ awareness of the importance of ethical decisions in business with an emphasis on accounting;
  • expose students to real-world scenarios that they may encounter in their future careers;
  • provide students with the opportunity to enhance their critical thinking and presentation skills at the intersection of business ethics and contemporary accounting issues.

Working in teams of two to four students, participants will analyze a thought-provoking case and present their solutions in front of a panel of judges. The number of student teams will be capped at six. The competition is open to all McGill students. Participants might find it advantageous to form teams with expertise in diverse areas (e.g., strategy, marketing, organizational behaviour, finance, etc.). However, it is highly recommended that at least one student on the team has completed an intermediate accounting course (ACCT 351). The teams that place first and second will be awarded a prize of $1,000 and $500 respectively. All other participating teams (that do not place first and second) will receive an honorarium of $200 per team.
