Desautels professors celebrated for their teaching excellence

Published: 2 July 2020

Congratulations to Sebastien Betermier, Professor of Finance, and Wei Qi, Professor of Operations Management, who were honoured at McGill’s Management Convocation ceremony for their excellence in teaching.

The recipient of the Fetherstonhaugh Family Foundation Distinguished Teaching Award for Undergraduate Programs at Desautels, Professor Wei Qi, is known for his innovative and interactive course material linked to real-world, data-driven situations. His approach to teaching helps students bridge the gap between complex data science theory and its broader social implications. A passionate educator, his enthusiasm and expertise in data science has encouraged some students to pursue careers and further studies in the field. His students describe him as kind and patient and are grateful for the extra time he devotes to coaching and supporting them one-on-one.

Professor Sebastien Betermier, recipient of the Morty Yalovsky Distinguished Teaching Award for Graduate Programs at Desautels, has been teaching Finance and Investment at Desautels since 2010. Described by his students as engaging, passionate and knowledgeable, Professor Betermier is exceptional at tailoring his classes to suit the needs of diverse groups of students, enabling them to have a solid understanding of the fundamental concepts of finance. Five years ago, Professor Betermier founded the successful McGill International Portfolio Challenge (MIPC) with a vision of applying finance to drive responsible and creative solutions for complex social and environmental issues.
