Tech companies are doing more international hiring – and paying engineers top dollar

Published: 12 April 2022

Technology has long had the capability to enable work from anywhere that has a solid internet connection – but many companies haven’t been willing to use it that way. Even tech companies that create the tools for remote work have tended to concentrate their workforce in major tech hubs like Silicon Valley and Seattle.

But that is changing, writes Prof. Maxime Cohen on Fortune.com. U.S. tech firms are increasingly hiring software engineers who work abroad. In one six-month period in 2021, foreign hiring grew by nearly 75 per cent. And the salaries of foreign-based workers are rising too. Tech giants have traditionally paid a premium for U.S.-based workers, but during that same six-month period, the salaries of new hires in Canada jumped by 38 per cent!
