Obsessing over leadership can lead to a world full of followers. Prof. Henry Mintzberg has identified 52 qualities of effective managers, and no one person has all of them. No matter how competent a manager is, they will always have strengths and weaknesses. That’s why the John Cleghorn Professor of Management Studies at Desautels advocates for “communityship”, an approach that de-emphasizes the primacy of top executives, and seeks to engage employees by respecting the knowledge and abilities that each one brings to the organization.
