Montreal Gazette article praises partnership between DISE, James Lyng Urban Arts School: "High School Rocks!"

Published: 8 June 2018

Montreal Gazette Homepage"It’s not often you’ll hear a teen saying, 'High school rocks!'," wrote Montreal Gazette reporter T'Cha Dunlevy this week, "But it’s hard to think of a better way to describe what’s going on at James Lyng." The feature article looks at the success of one aspect of the urban arts partnership between St-Henri's James Lyng Urban Arts School and the Department of Integrated Studies in Education (DISE) at McGill.

In 2015 DISE embarked on a program to support the transformation of James Lyng High into an urban arts school, the first of its kind in Canada. The goals of the new perspectives are to engage students in support of learning, and improve success rates.

The partnership grant, "Building partnership synergy between school, university, and community artists", is funded by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC), led by DISE Prof. Bronwen Low, and supported by DISE Profs. Mindy Carter, Claudia Mitchell and Elizabeth Wood.
